Do you start your day like an actual crazy person? Is it just chaos and rushing around from the second you wake up? Yep, I’ve been there. I spent most of my first year of motherhood waking up and feeling like I was already behind. There was just so much to do… change baby butts, wash clothes, pump boobie milk, do the dishes from last night, have a shower (Ha! Yeah right!) It always felt like in order to get everything done I basically just had to stop sleeping altogether. I became stressed, easily pissed off and completely discouraged. In short, I felt completely out of whack. So how did I fix it? Well, mamma’s gonna tell you!

A Good Morning Begins The Night Before

I’m still pretty crap at this, as by the time bubba is in bed and I’ve got dinner out of the way I feel just about ready to collapse into a heap on my pillow. But when I do prepare for the day the night before it makes my day run SO much more smoothly! It means when I wake up in the morning, rather than desperately wracking my brains for what I need to pack for our day out (and inevitably forgetting half of it) I can just focus on spending some quiet time drinking my coffee.

Some things to prepare the night before that have really helped me include:

  • Packing bags
  • Laying our outfits out ready
  • Writing my ‘to-do’ list
  • Checking the calendar
  • Setting the coffee machine up ready so that all I have to do is push a button

I love using my handy-dandy daily planner sheets to get myself all organised for the following day. It’s actually a really nice part of my evening routine because it helps to clear my mind. If I don’t get it all out onto paper I’ll just lay awake in bed with all the things I need to try to remember to do racing around my head. Give your brain a break and write it down. Get Up Earlier!

I bang on about this a lot, but that’s only because I know what a HUGE difference it can make in the life of a mother! I’ve experienced it first hand. As difficult as it can be to tear myself out of the comfort of my bed, having even just fifteen minutes to myself in the morning before going into ‘mama-mode’ is literally the best thing I can do for myself and my productivity. My morning routine has become one of the favourite parts of my day.

My number one tip for getting up earlier is to give yourself a real incentive for getting up. Have a routine that you absolutely love and that makes you feel amazing. If you’re a workout junkie, go for a run. If you love to read but never get the chance anymore, take the chance before everyone wakes up. That’s what I have done. I’ve created a cosy nook in the living room with cushions and a fluffy throw, and I spend my morning snuggled up with my coffee and a good book! Bliss!

Shorten The To-Do List

Feeling overwhelmed and behind? Odds are you have a to-do list the size of your arm. When we have a bazillion-and-one things that we ‘have’ to get done, is it any wonder we mamas can turn into actual crazy people? The best thing you can do for yourself and your sanity is to chop down that to-do list. Remember that we all have a season of life, and (especially if you have really tiny kids that take up all of your attention) we just can’t do everything all the time. As much as we would love to be superwoman, there’s only so much you can do.

Ask yourself which of the things are true necessities, and then wish the other crap that’s filling up your life farewell. If you don’t love it, if doing it won’t make you or your family happy, if it won’t affect anyone, then it’s most likely not important. Your time and your focus are precious, and they should be reserved only for the things that you really care about, or that are going to make a significant difference in your life. So what if there’s a cupboard in your house that you’ve been meaning to clear out for the past ten years? If it’s not bothering you, don’t waste your energy. Focus on what matters and don’t sweat the small stuff. Life is too short.
