How do you balance managing a home, raising kids, being a wife AND working?
I don’t! That’s the simple answer. Balancing life is really tough, especially when you have so many balls to juggle. I basically try to figure out what is going to make my life easier, and make that a priority. If my husband is happy, my life is a lot easier, so I do a lot to try to show him how much I love him. If my house is somewhat tidy, I am less stressed, so I try to keep it that way the majority of the time. I don’t do everything and I don’t do it perfectly, I just do what is needed to make life go as smoothly as possible.
My husband is gone a lot due to work. How can I do it all on my own?
By lowering your expectations a little and going easy on yourself. If you’re raising kids and running a home all by yourself, you’re not going to be able to do as much as if someone was there to help you, and expecting it of yourself will just drive you to insanity. Take a deep breath, do the best you can, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends and family.
What would you suggest for a struggling marriage?
It really depends on what the struggle is. Your first step would be to figure out what exactly is going wrong, and then you can look at some action steps to help improve that. Communication is key. You may be thinking one thing and he may be thinking the complete opposite, so make sure you are talking about your issues and resolving them together. I am a firm believer that marriages that include date nights and lots of sex are happier marriages, so see if there are ways that you could spice things up in the bedroom a bit. Be the couple you were before you had kids.
How can I get my family to help out?
Ask them. If you feel like your husband isn’t pulling his weight, calmly explain to him why you would like the house to be a little cleaner or tidier. Don’t go pointing fingers, just ask nicely. If it’s your kids that are taking advantage, try implementing a reward scheme for doing chores. My number one tip though is if your family isn’t helping out, do it anyway. They may not care about having a clean house, but you do, so do it for yourself, no one else.
